Wood blanks for turning
Locating and/or producing plenty of wood blanks for turning is one of the unavoidable tasks of your learning to turn wood adventure.
Now you have a few choices here when it comes to buying wood turning blanks:
· if your feeling impatient, you can purchase your wood blanks for turning from a commercial wood blank source.
· or if you’re lucky you may be able to find a local woodturner who has an overstock of wood bowl blanks (sometimes even pen blanks for wood turning) which can generally be obtained at a reasonable price.
This second option can be especially gratifying and informative if you are a fellow turned wood enthusiast.
Woodturners LOVE to talk
Most wood turners are very generous and excited to share their passion with other like-minded folks.
They can also be an excellent source of info on the local wood turning scene and will talk with you about the subject for as long as your interest sustains, or until it’s time for dinner (whichever comes first) … at which point, you have a decent shot at being invited to the meal to finish your conversation!
But I digress …
Once you’ve gotten your feet wet doing a few wood turning projects, purchasing wood blanks for turning can be extremely rewarding and instantly gratifying. A good portion of the prep work has already been done and the wood is likely to have been properly dried.
However….
If you’re like the rest of your woodturning pals (and if you don’t find them, they WILL find you), your hunger for more and more blanks for wood turning will soon outstrip your wallet and willingness to wait for the mailman to deliver them.
You will need to begin unraveling the wood collecting/drying/storing process that suits you and your workshop space best.
